Cicadabird Nest

Common Cicadabird

Female on nest

Highfields, Queensland, Australia

December 23, 2013

Kevin Williams and I had an early start on Monday. It was surprisingly cool at 5am and I would have been comfortable with long sleeves. Kevin showed me a Cicadabird nest with the female sitting. We had a quick look then went off birding. We went back about 4 hours later when it was much warmer, and the female had gone and we could just make out the face of a single chick. We waited for a while but the Mum didn't return soon so we left. I bet she was watching and waiting.

Thank you, Kev.

Notice the change of colours as it went from foggy and overcast in the early morning to quite sunny and blue.

I'd never seen a cicadabird; does this mean they eat cicadas?? Lovely photos Russell

Thanks, Carole. I think they are called Cicadabirds because they have a long monotonous call like a cicada. They are a small cuckoo-shrike so I guess they eat insects too. I wouldn't put it pass them to eat a cicada.

That's a beautiful little nest, and a special sighting. They're not common around Melbourne.

For me, one of the true delights about birding, remains finding a nest. I think you hit paydirt here! Congratulations.

Nice pictures - that face looks a little squashed!

Everyy time I come down here I get new birds, now another one. I wondered too about the name but you answered that. Shame about the long sleeves Russell - here at 8am I'm wondering how many layers to put on before I go out. Yes, four on top, two below + hat, scarf and gloves - sigh.
