Australian Nankeen Kestrel

Australian Nankeen Kestrel female

Darling Downs near Kingsthorpe, Queensland, Australia

March 28, 2013

These pictures were taken on a drive with Kevin Williams back in March.

My first field guide when I was a kid called these Nankeen Kestrels, then my next books labelled them as Australian Kestrels, (which I got use to saying) and now my new apps and books have it again as Nankeen. I usually just call them kestrels when I'm in Australia. It just gets confusing when I want to set them apart from Common Kestrels in Japan, or should I say, Eurasian Kestrels?

Some Black Cockatoos

Palm Cockatoo

Iron Range National Park, Cape York, Queensland, Australia

October 2012

This post is for Noushka who recently expressed a love for Australia's magnificent black cockatoos.

These are only poor record shots of three species, but still they are wild records that are important encounters for me.

It seems whenever I find them they are into the sun.

Mt Mowbullan

View from Mount Mowbullan

Bunya Mountains National Park, Queensland, Australia

April 2, 2013

I remember getting out of the car and running around here when I was a kid.... (On a cold, windy August afternoon) I seem to visit the same spot every couple of years or so. Maybe this time, it was four years in-between...

If you stop there, you have to get out and look at the horizon. After a few minutes, somebody else will stop and do the same.

It is the highest peak (About 1100 metres) of the Bunya Mountains National Park. A beautiful place boasting the world's biggest collection of Bunya Pines.

young Wedge-tailed Eagle

I was very excited to see the Bunyas had gotten a new eagle.
I saw her about the place with two mature black adults but she was pale and very new.

Into the sun...

Grey Heron Action

Nikon D800 AF-S Nikkor 80-400mm VR

Some Grey Heron action at Fukushimagata taken on in the afternoon of my last bulbul post. Colours are so blue and green at the end of May, and although the spring migrants had gone it makes for a pleasant walk.

Lots of Grey Herons about on that day so knew I should post about them.

Got these pics last weekend. Very quiet as most of the spring migrants have gone. It seems we're now left with the summer regulars. I've posted these photos because I'm happy to see green after a long grey winter. I'm also pretty happy with the work my D800 does in the shadows. I usually take raw but the originals of these are j-pegs. I've sharpened a couple as I didn't focus them properly to start with.
