Turning Around

Gull-billed Tern

Lockyer Valley, Queensland, Australia

August 2015

Enjoyed a good day out with Rod Hobson back in August. We scanned around the Lockyer Valley and found some nice sights.

An interesting behavioural subject was a number of Gull-billed Terns flying back and forth over a freshly ploughed field. It was just countryside away from any bodies of water. Some of the photos have spots on them. I think they were large insects and not dust on the sensor.

Visiting Home

Rainbow Lorikeets

Oakey, Queensland, Australia

August 2015

Tree hollows are very important in Australia. Here, a pair of Rainbow Lorikeets look out to see who's approaching their tree.

Gotta keep the trees!

Back to work tomorrow after 5 days off. Oh dear.

A Square-tail in the Blue

Square-tailed Kite

North of Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia

August 2015

Another exciting raptor seen with Kevin Williams on my August visit home. Unfortunately, it was a bit high but these are my best shots of this species since 1994. That's what you get when you live away. I have sighted them high and far away on other occasions but failed to get any shots at those times.

This one also seemed to be carrying nesting material which is good. Notice how long those wings are and the huge primaries. They are a unique Australian species and certainly not common. A nice encounter indeed!

Blue Skies of a Winter August

Black-shouldered Kite

Gowrie Junction, Queensland, Australia

August, 2015

(Above and below)

Here are some pics from a couple of outings with Kevin Williams in the second week of August. The mornings were cold but the sky was blue and incredibly clear. The days warmed up and were very comfortable. I certainly wasn't bored with beautiful birds everywhere.

These pics were with the Nikon D7100 and Nikkor AF-S 80-400mm VR. I think they are nice and clear but I was having trouble framing them with a smaller viewfinder than the D800 and I kept chopping off the bird's wings when they flew... It was the first real run I've had with the camera since I got it. On other days I felt birds in Australia were too far away with the full-framed D800...

Getting back to the birds....aren't Black-shouldered Kites just superb up against the blue?

Thanks for the outings, Kevin!

The Friend Who Tweeted Us

Spotted Pardalote

male

Highfields Falls, Queensland, Australia

August 2015

Kevin Williams and I were enjoying a stroll through Highfields Falls one August morning when we were confronted by this male Spotted Pardalote. He landed in a young gum directly in front of us and ensured eye contact while giving us some soft tweets. Kevin and I didn't really know what to say back to him but I took 111 frames. He was so tiny and it was really challenging not to get shadows across his face.

He was a pleasant fellow to meet along the track. I'm sure he is busy with a young family now.
