Eurasian Cuckoo in Flight

Eurasian Cuckoo

Fukushimagata, Niigata, Japan

June 24, 2017

Had a nice fly-by encounter with this cuckoo yesterday. I often hear cuckoos in summer here but they hide in thick green trees and hurriedly fly away if I approach them. My first post of this species on this blog.

Ospreys Around the Wetlands

Fukushimagata, Niigata, Japan

June 11, 2017

Went out early this morning to Fukushimagata and had a nice encounter with this Osprey. I was using my little D7100 which worked ok but left me wishing for more frames per second. I took too many as it began diving then I had to wait for the buffer to empty as it hit the water. (I also lost focus when it was taking off again) I'll have to bite the bullet and get a D500. I tried out my D300 when I got home and although it is lower resolution, it felt a bit beefier so might go back with it next weekend.

The adult Osprey seemed busy feeding a single, newly fledged bird waiting in a small tree out in the middle of the wetlands. Maybe mum is still in a nest somewhere with other mouths to feed too. I hope.

Looks like a young one on the lower left branch.

Roses of June 2017

Echigo Hillside Park, Nagaoka, Niigata, Japan

June 4, 2017

We visited the rose gardens at Echigo Hillside Park in Nagaoka today. The roses were at their peek on May 31. They are still quite beautiful but we've had strong yet cool wind the last few days. The roses bouncing around in the wind made photographing them quite challenging.

There are roses from all around the world so it is a special place to visit and we enjoyed rose-flavoured soft ice-cream.
