Oriental Stork

Oriental Stork

Niigata, Japan

October 30, 2016

The Oriental Stork became extinct in Japan in the 1970s and a captive breeding program was commenced with a pair brought in from China.

Globally, the Oriental Stork can be found in China and Siberia with an estimated population of just one to two and a half thousand according to the Birdlife International factsheet.

You can see this one has rings around its legs and is fitted with a transmitter. I hope if finds somewhere to go for winter which is quickly coming.

Mr Honma kindly took me to see this and he drove me around stubbornly until he found it. There was no way we were going home without it.

If I have a win on the Melbourne Cup I'd like to buy him a new pair of binoculars. He only has half a pair, but he says, "It's good enough".

White Bellies

White-bellied Sea-eagles

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, Queensland, Australia

August 9, 2016

When you don't expect it, expect it. We were walking around feeding kangaroos at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary when I heard lots of bird alarms and the birds started scattering. I looked up and saw the above pair of White-bellied Sea-eagles as they charged in overhead. Unfortunately, I had my camera settings set for close-ups of captive kangaroo and wasn't prepared for action. The eagles went right over us then started circling behind a big tree. I was calling out to the people around me and a young woman was grateful that I pointed them out and took some pics too. The last thing you expect to see at the zoo are wild animals. Just shows you how great Australia is!

The third one was a youngish one

Common Kingfisher

Fukushimagata, Niigata, Japan

October 16, 2016

Here's a bunch of shots of a Common Kingfisher at Fukushimagata this morning. Mr Honma was delighted when he spotted it and it was kind enough to stay for quite a while before diving down for a fish and finally disappearing.

Niigata Moon

Niigata City, Niigata, Japan

October 14, 2016

I always like the October moon in Niigata. Tonight when I was taking this picture, I heard my first swan for the season call out as it passed over head.

Whiskered Terns in Niigata

Whiskered Tern

Fukushimagata, Niigata, Japan

October 1 and 2, 2016

I believe Whiskered Terns are very rare visitors to Japan. This was my first record for them in Japan. I have seen them in Australia but they were too far away for decent pics. Strange for them to come as far north as Niigata. It has been very hot for this time of the year.

I saw White-winged Black Terns at the beginning of summer which was also a new record for me.

On Saturday, I took pics with the Nikon D800 and 200-500mm Nikkor and Sunday, I used a Nikon D7100 with 80-400mm VR AF-S.
