Koala drinking at a water sprinkler

Capalaba, Queensland, Australia

Brisbane heatwave of 1995

These pictures are from the Brisbane heatwave of 1995. It was the hottest then summer in fifty years. I couldn't understand it when the news said it was 100% humidity -I thought we'd be under water...

Anyway, we were trying get cool in the late afternoon in a Capalaba backyard when we were surprised by a visitor to our water sprinkler. The koala ignored us and licked up water under the sprinkler like a cat at a milk bowl. He/she stayed a while then went back to the trees.

I was very saddened last night when watching Brisbane news to hear of the death of the last female Koala at Noosa National Park. There are just two males remaining there. More here: Sunshine Coast Daily

I remember seeing Koalas there many years ago.

I then watched the news here in Japan. They announced that the Japanese Eel had just been registered as an endangered species. A highly regarded food in Japan, the news program interviewed people on the street. One man said, "I'll be sad if I can't eat it anymore".
