Return of the Great Ice Eagle

Steller's Sea-eagle

Niigata, Japan

February 10, 2013

The best thing about this post is the title. Anyway, these are my only shots of a Steller's this year. The last was February 19, 2011. I guess it's nice to know the pics are just a few hours old.

Mr Honma and I had an early start as we'd tried other days but the eagle had departed before we arrived. We got there just before 7am. The eagle eventually left just before 9 and stirred up geese in the surroundings.

Above and below: Couldn't work this out at first but I think it's an adult male Northern Goshawk
....or is it a Sparrowhawk?

There were mixes of Bean Goose and Greater White-fronted Goose,
as well as Whooper and Tundra Swans in the surrounding fields.

That landscape doesn't look too inviting Russell - it's making me shiver. Good to see the eagle in its natural environment and how tiny it looks on that huge pylon. The hawk looks like a Gos from here.

Incredible environment for those birds to be in! Looks like an incredible bird, the image with the corvid only adds to how impressive it is. Hopefully you'll get some more images before the year is out.

Beautiful landscape Russell.

The Stellar's is such a majestic eagle. Honestly, I would not have a clue on how to cope with birding in such conditions.

Well we may have more eagles up here but you have a lot more geese down there.........

What a weather! I wouldn't dare leaving my house if that's the case.

Northern Goshawk, I think... the eagle atop the electricity pylon looks like something out of a science fiction film.

I like the geese in the snow-covered stubble!
