Shrike

Bull-headed Shrike

female

Fukushimagata, Niigata, Japan

January 12, 2013

I'm hoping this is a Bull-headed Shrike and not a Brown Shrike. If you know better, please let me know. I'm not too familiar with either species but I'm pretty excited when I see one as Australia doesn't have any kind of shrike. If I'm with a Japanese birder they will usually ignore them and hurry off because of their threat to small birds. Supposedly it's hard to find other birds about if there is a shrike around. It is usually difficult to get close to them in Niigata so I'm happy to get these shots. I'm guessing she is a young one. Actually I have numerous distant shots of others.

Yes it's a Bullheaded Shrike. Brown is pretty rare in Japan now, I've only ever seen 2 and they are only summer visitors............

Nice shots anyway. These tend to leave in Hokkaido in winter, I won't generally see any until late March...........
