Mass Camouflage

Plumed Whistling-Duck
Jondaryan, Queensland, August 23, 2011
Another sighting on the August 23 outing with Kevin Williams. Luckily, not much gets by Kevin and he sighted these Plumed Whistling-Ducks taking shelter by this small dam near Jondaryan. As you can see by the pics, lighting conditions changed dramatically by the moment but I think that adds to the spectacle.

Oh my goodness! I can't believe how many there were! Just like images I have seen on docos. I have seen these ducks at highfields in a paddock a few years ago now, but no where near the mass group seen in your photos! Great pics as usual!

Hi Russell, you sure there isn't a gannet in there somewhere? :-) Must have been awesome and loud!

Wow that flock is truly massive! It's pretty funny too to see how small the area of water and how big the flock is. I wonder if all the birds move into the pond, would they fill up the whole water surface.

That's amazing Russell. Do they always congregate so close together? They look like reared ducks behaving like that.

Wow, fantastic. I saw similar flocks at Lake Tinaroo on the Atherton Tablelands.

These are awesome shots! Are there many other pools in the surrounding area?

Actually, good question Fraser! I think this was the only small dam in the vicinity...maybe about one kilometre from a creek.
Thanks for your comments everyone!
