Weasel in the Snow.

Went looking for the local Steller's Sea-eagle yesterday but no luck. (It was last seen on Friday as far as I know) Anyway, it was a beautiful day and I got some firsts. The highlight of the day for me for sure was my first ever weasel. A Japanese Weasel (Mustela itatsi) to be precise. "Itachi" -Japanese.

I was most impressed with this little beauty. ....and got as many pics as I could before she/he disappeared.

My other first was the Great Spotted Woodpecker (below). I saw both a male and female from a distance but only photographed the female. (Hopefully I'll get closer next time)

Actually, I took over 500 photos for the day. Struth. An unusually big haul for me. It's gonna take a while to get through them. (All at Fukushimagata, Niigata)

Great shots of the weasel.

I occasionally take 500 a day too, usually if I take BIF shots and overdo the continuous shooting. The 7D has huge 24MB files and can take 8 shots per second. I swear I spend more time hunched over the computer than I do taking pictures.......

Aww how come this guy let you get so close, I'm jealous!
I saw them several times in Beppu but they always ran away into thick bushes before I can get any shot.

I just got the Great Spotted WP as my life bird in Kushiro as well!
It was a fantastic trip. I'll upload the photos and story very soon.

Lovely animal and great shots. Do they go white like Mustela erminea?

Hmm, interesting. Sorry, Phil, I don't know if they go white. I'll have to look that one up! So much to learn...
Thanks for your comments everyone.

Japanese weasel (Mustera itatsi) doesn't go white in winter.

Good photos, I want to take intermediate mammals' photos like these!
