Young Goshawk Check-up

Northern Goshawk

Niigata City, Japan

July 16, 2012

Went to check up on the young goshawks and am happy to say the two look like they're doing pretty well. It was a hot day and we could see they were panting along with the conditions. I watched as one swooped down to a bush with a sparrow in it and enjoyed watching the young bird walk around and become distracted by a big bumble bee and the sparrow made the most of the distraction to disappear.

It was a great opportunity and I couldn't choose which pics to upload so here's a bunch. Love their facial expressions even in the heat.

A Black-eared Kite called out while soaring high above us.

Stunning, Russell!
Must be really exciting to be able to get so close to this majestic species. Even juvenile birds look as fierce as the adults.

These are all stunning photos Russell! Looks like an incredible bird. I often see the birds panting in the sun here as well. I love the photo of him looking up:)

Wonderful shots Russell with all those expressions and poses. What I'd give for a chance to photograph Goshawks.
