Northern Lapwing.

Northern Lapwings
(Fukushimagata, November 27, 2010)

Just wanted to post these photos before I forgot about them. I know they're not great but they're the best I have of this species. They are fairly abundant around Fukushimagata in the cooler months but I rarely get close enough for photo opportunities. I usually watch for them to start flocking as a sign that either a peregrine or goshawk is on the move. On the day I took these photos they were being harassed by Black-eared Kites and went back and forth across the nearby rice-fields. They looked quite beautiful in the clear, blue skies.

Nice BIFs!

This is a very common species in the UK but I have seen the grand total of TWO individuals in Japan in 11 years!

Fantastic photos Russell. Went for a walk up the road to the TV towers at Mt Lofty and a peregrine flew in, great to see, must get down to the Bridge Street quarry to see if they are about. Cheers, Rob. PS Link to your blog on mine now.

You're right Russell their black and white plumage looks amazing in a clear blue sky. What a terrible shame that they have declined so much here in the UK - hope they don't do so in your part of the world.

Wow I'd love to see them in a big flock like that! These birds are not so common in the south. I've only seen them once or twice.
